City modernising fleet strategy and set to roll out new energy vehicles

The City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services Directorate is currently working on a new Fleet Strategy that aims to centralise and modernise the City’s fleet of assets through the establishment of Centre of Excellence and Fleet Risk and Operational Command Centre initiatives. The strategic focus of the new fleet strategy will be on delivering cleaner, sustainable mobility, while addressing the demands of effective service delivery by all City Directorates.

‘The City currently has a fleet of over 10 000 vehicles and these range from sedans, trucks, refuse compactors, construction vehicles, fire trucks, and LDVs to minibuses. With such a large fleet, it is important that we are mindful of costs and ensure that we have optimised fleet performance and management systems. The establishment of a Centre of Excellence and a Fleet Risk and Operational Command Centre translates into the standardisation of governance and best practices across fleet directorates,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.

The strategic outcomes to be delivered through the implementation of a new fleet strategy:
• Customer-centric services through enhanced responsiveness and satisfaction in fleet service delivery
• Efficient asset lifecycle management to optimise vehicle age, residual values and utilisation rates
• Cost management that introduces Total Cost of Ownership models for accurate tracking and management of assets
• Data and technological integration through the use of telematics and real-time analytics for enhanced decision-making
• A competent and productive workforce that is capable of managing a future-fit fleet
• Following best practices through benchmarking and innovating for optimised fleet performance and management

‘The long-term benefits of this new strategy will also lead to the upskilling of artisans as we further integrate green fleet initiatives. The City’s New Energy Vehicles initiative aligns with global climate goals while enhancing operational efficiency across the City's fleet. There will be a noticeable move beyond just battery electric vehicles to embracing the full spectrum of new energy vehicle technologies. This includes battery electric, hybrid electric and other alternative fuel vehicles to maximise flexibility. These vehicles will be gradually phased in from as early as July this year,’ said Alderman Uys.

The new fleet strategy sets out to contribute towards Cape Town's 2050 Climate Neutral Goal by transitioning to sustainable mobility solutions while reducing global emissions.
